Ashwagandha, also known as "Indian ginseng," is a bushy plant with oval leaves and yellow flowers, bearing raisin-sized red fruits. It originates from the dry regions of India and can also be found in North Africa and the Middle East. Today, it is cultivated in areas with predominantly mild climates, including North America.

A marvelous plant from ancient India

Due to its potent properties, traditionally believed to be powerful, Ashwagandha has been used in India for thousands of years but has only recently gained worldwide fame. Its traditional use is reflected in the literal translation of its name. The word "ashwagandha" translates to "the smell of a horse" - as the fresh herb has a slight horse-like smell, it is believed that consuming Ayurveda with it imparts the strength of a horse.¹:
